From Pharaohs to Foreign Rulers – The Rise and Fall of Ancient Egypt

For over 1,500 years, Egypt stood as one of the most powerful civilizations in the ancient world. The New Kingdom saw the rise of an empire, legendary rulers like Hatshepsut, Akhenaten, and Ramesses the Great, and monumental achievements in warfare, diplomacy, and culture. But even as Egypt expanded its reach, it faced internal struggles and waves of foreign rulers—from Libyans and Nubians to the Assyrians and Persians.

Join us for a six-week live course as we journey through the imperial triumphs, political upheavals, and final struggles of ancient Egypt, culminating in Cleopatra’s defeat and the end of Egypt’s pharaonic rule. 📌 The transformation of Egyptian society and religion

After centuries of division, Egypt reclaimed its power and built an empire. This session explores how the pharaohs of the 18th Dynasty forged a new Egypt, taking control of lands beyond the Nile.

Lecture 2: Pharaohs, Gods, and Heretics – The Power and Crisis of the 18th Dynasty

📌 Hatshepsut – Egypt’s female pharaoh and her legacy
📌 Akhenaten and the Amarna Revolution – A failed experiment?
📌 Tutankhamun and the return to tradition
📌 The rise of priestly power and internal struggles

From divine kings to radical reformers, this session unpacks one of the most controversial periods in Egyptian history. How did Akhenaten’s religious revolution shake Egypt? And how did his successors undo his legacy?

Lecture 3: The Age of Ramesses – Empire at Its Height

📌 Seti I and the revival of Egyptian might
📌 Ramesses the Great – The Battle of Kadesh and the first peace treaty
📌 Monumental building projects – Abu Simbel, Karnak, and more
📌 The decline of the Ramesside line and loss of empire

Ramesses II left a legacy unlike any other pharaoh, but his successors faced mounting challenges. This session explores Egypt’s last great era of expansion and the struggles that followed.

Lecture 4: Foreign Pharaohs – Libyans and Nubians Take the Throne

📌 The decline of native Egyptian rule
📌 Libyan dynasties and their influence on Egypt
📌 The Kushite pharaohs and their African empire
📌 The fall of Thebes and the end of an era

As Egypt’s native rulers weakened, foreign dynasties from Libya and Nubia took the throne. Some embraced Egyptian traditions, while others reshaped them. This session explores how Egypt adapted to foreign leadership.

Lecture 5: Invasion and Empire – The Assyrian and Persian Conquests

📌 The Assyrian invasions – Egypt under Sargon and Ashurbanipal
📌 The struggle for independence and brief Egyptian revivals
📌 The Persian takeover – Egypt under Darius and Xerxes
📌 How foreign rule reshaped Egypt’s identity

Egypt became a battleground for Near Eastern superpowers, facing brutal invasions and foreign domination. This session explores the fall of the last native dynasties and Egypt’s place in a changing world.

Lecture 6: The Last Pharaohs – Alexander, the Ptolemies, and Cleopatra

📌 Alexander the Great’s conquest of Egypt
📌 The Ptolemies – Macedonian rulers on the Nile
📌 The rise of Alexandria – Egypt’s new cultural capital
📌 Cleopatra VII – Egypt’s last queen and her struggle with Rome

With Alexander’s arrival and the reign of the Ptolemies, Egypt entered a new era of Greek rule, cultural fusion, and dynastic intrigue. This final session explores Cleopatra’s battle to preserve Egypt’s independence—and how her defeat marked the end of pharaonic Egypt.
