More than a technical exercise alone, these workshops explore figure drawing as a poetic language of movement, structure, atmosphere, and light. Students will study the human form through sustained observation while learning principles inspired by the Florentine approach to drawing — where gesture, anatomy, rhythm, and painterly sensitivity work together to bring life to the figure.
Unlike rigid academic systems that often reduce the body to formula, the Italian tradition emphasizes flow, vitality, and expressive structure. Through long pose study, artists are given the opportunity to slow down, observe deeply, and develop a more meaningful connection to the human form.
Working alongside apprentices within the atelier environment, students will receive personalized guidance while exploring:
• The Italian gestural approach to figure construction
• Rhythmic anatomical drawing inspired by Renaissance draftsmanship
• Long pose study and sustained observation
• Drawing through masses, atmosphere, and light
• Structural anatomy without losing movement or poetry
• The relationship between drawing and painting
• Florentine traditions of red chalk, charcoal, and tonal drawing
• The expressive possibilities of line, edge, and value
• Developing sensitivity to gesture, proportion, and form
• Historical atelier practices adapted for contemporary artists
Artists may work in graphite, charcoal, red chalk, grisaille, or limited palette depending on their experience and interests.
Whether you are new to figure drawing or a more experienced artist seeking a deeper understanding of the figure, these workshops are designed to support artists at many stages of development. No prior atelier experience is required.
June 8–19
